The Milkers of Mangrt Mountain

These men live in the shadow of Mangrt Mountain in Slovenia. The sheep and goat's milk is made into cheese, which is sold to hikers, tourists and others who pass through their valley. This image was taken of them milking the sheep early in the morning. July 2014.

The Artist in his Shop Mark Walker AKA the Antipodean Tynker is an Australian craftsman who builds steampunk motorcycles in a tiny shop in Walcha, Australia. He has only allowed a few people in his shop. This photo was made in November 2017. I wandered into his shop, and he agreed to let me make this photograph.

The Underwear Salesman Turned Farmer

The Underwear Salesman Turned Farmer I photographed Carlos Ribeiro on his farm stay near Guimarães, Portugal (a few hours from Porto). Carlos told me he had been an underwear salesman, and had quit in the 1980s when the market was flooded with overseas goods. He opened his farm stay, and was openly joyous about the change, even nearly 20 years after doing it. I believe his satisfaction with life is clear in this image of him admiring his mushroom crop.

Chris from Cowhead Ranch

Chris Calvin was the owner and operator of Cowhead Ranch near Big Bend National Park in West Texas. His ranch consisted of fake old western buildings like this saloon. Staying there was cheap and colorful (provided you didn't mind some dust on your bed and chickens coming in the room in the morning to wake you up). He passed way on January 22, 2014, and West Texas lost a true character. Godspeed.

George builds four-valve heads for early Harley-Davidson knuckleheads. He doesn't have a website, email address or online presence. His phone number is unlisted. He doesn't advertise. Unless you know someone who knows George, you can't use his heads on your engine. His handcrafted heads, incidentally, are widely considered the best available.
